It is the capital of the Central Macedonia region and is situated on the Thermaic Gulf, which is part of the Aegean Sea. Thessaloniki has a rich history, having been founded in 315 BC by Cassander, a general of Alexander the Great, and named after Alexander's sister, Thessalonike.
