Niihau is located in the Hawaiian Islands in the central Pacific Ocean and is part of the U.S. state of Hawaii. The island lies west of Kauai and north of the island of Niihau’s smaller neighbor, Lehua, surrounded by the Pacific Ocean.
Geographically, Niihau is situated at approximately 21.9000° North latitude and 160.1500° West longitude. It is separated from Kauai by the Kaulakahi Channel and has no public ferry service. Nearby locations include Kauai to the east and Lehua Islet to the north, making Niihau one of the most isolated inhabited islands in Hawaii.
According to U.S. Census data, Niihau has a very small population of fewer than 100 residents. The island covers a total land area of about 69.5 square miles (180 square kilometers).
