Flag of the United States

The United States of America's national flag is commonly known as the American flag or the U.S. flag. The USA Flag is made up of thirteen equal horizontal red and white stripes. In the canton, a blue rectangle known as the "union" is adorned with fifty tiny, white, five-pointed stars that are arranged in nine offset horizontal rows with rows of six stars and rows of five stars in between. The 13 stripes on the flag stand in for the thirteen British colonies that proclaimed their independence from Great Britain and became the country's founding states. The 50 stars on the flag stand in for the country's 50 states. The Stars and Stripes, Old Glory, and the Star-Spangled Banner are all nicknames for the USA Flag.

The Continental Colours, also known as the Grand Union Flag, the Cambridge Flag, the Somerville Flag, or the Union Flag, was the first unofficial national flag hoisted after the American Revolution began on January 1, 1776, at Prospect Hill in Charlestown, Massachusetts. It was then the first unofficial USA Flag was hoisted. That USA flag had 13 horizontal stripes (probably red and white or red, white, and blue) and the first version of the British Union Flag in the canton.

The Stars and Stripes was the first official USA Flag, authorised by the Continental Congress on June 14, 1777. Congressman Francis Hopkinson, a signer of the Declaration of Independence from Philadelphia, was most likely the one who designed the flag. He may have had in mind a ring of stars to represent the brand-new constellation.

The USA Flag's current design is the 27th formal change to the original design since 1777. Before the 49-star version was made official on July 4, 1959, the 48-star flag was in use for 47 years. On August 21, 1959, President Eisenhower issued an order for the 50-star flag, which became official in July 1960. Having been in use for more than 62 years, USA Flag has seen the most usage.
