Lakes abound in the United States. Many of the lakes in the United States are among the largest on the planet. Lakes are an important resource since they not only produce water but also nurture nature and support ecosystems. Hydropower can be generated from lakes, and lakes can also be used for fishing and to create habitats for a variety of marine animals. Lakes are fantastic tourist destinations, and offer a variety of activities that foster economic growth and support human existence.

The five greatest lakes in the USA, together known as the Great Lakes, are Lake Superior, Lake Huron, Lake Michigan, Lake Erie, and Lake Ontario. They are situated near the U.S. and Canadian borders in the northern Midwest. The deepest lake in the USA is Crater Lake. Lake Michigan is the largest lake in the USA that is entirely within the borders of the United States and does not share a shoreline with any other nations. Out of the top 100 lakes in the USA, 55 are man-made and 45 are natural. Three of the top 100 lakes are mostly salt water.

Lake Superior is the largest freshwater lake in the world (by surface area). There are beaches, 200-foot sandstone cliffs, and waterfalls that plunge into the lake are some of the attractions of Lake Superior. To get to your desired location, you can take a ferry and one can hike, drive, and kayak there.
