Pennsylvania is one of the states of United States, which is known as Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania became the second state to be added the Union in the year 1787. The commonwealth of Pennsylvania shares the borders with Delaware in the southeast, Maryland in south, Ohio in the west, New York in the north and New Jersey in the east. The state ranks as the thirty three in its size. Pennsylvania is the fifth most populous state in the country with the population of 13,011,844. The capital city of the state is Harrisburg. Another interesting fact about the state is Pennsylvania is one the 13 original states of the United States.

Counties in Pennsylvania are 67 in number. The biggest county by its geographical size is Lycoming which is in 1,228.59 square miles. Bradford County gets second position in its size with 1,147.40 square miles. The tinniest county in the state of Pennsylvania is Montour with 130 square miles. The other small counties in the state are Philadelphia, Delaware. Among the Counties in Pennsylvania, Philadelphia County has got the highest population with 1,603,797. The other counties like Allegheny, Montgomery and Bucks are next to Philadelphia in terms of population. The least populated counties are Cameron, Sullivan and Potter.

The commonwealth of Pennsylvania has six types of governments which are mentioned in the constitution of the state. They are County, Township, Borough, Town, City and School Districts. Counties in Pennsylvania are further divided into 2,561 municipalities. As of now there are no independent cities or unincorporated territories. In fact there is only 1 incorporated town in the state of Pennsylvania. Most of the counties are administered by a board of commissioners. The board of commissioners act as the legislative and executive body of local governance for the counties. Of all Counties in Pennsylvania there are seven counties which follow the home rule.
