The county was established in 1923 and was named after Captain Francis Asbury Hendry, a cattle rancher and Florida legislator. The county seat is LaBelle, and the largest city is Clewiston. Hendry County is largely rural and is known for agriculture, particularly sugarcane production near Lake Okeechobee.
