Situated in southeastern Pennsylvania along the Delaware River, the township lies northeast of Philadelphia and is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. Bensalem was established in 1692 and is one of the oldest municipalities in Pennsylvania, with its name believed to be derived from a combination of “Bensalem,” a biblical reference, and early colonial influences.
