Where is Harahan Located?

Harahan is a city located in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, the United States. It lies in southeastern Louisiana on the south side of the Mississippi River, about 10 miles west of downtown New Orleans and roughly 15 miles east of Kenner. Harahan is part of the New Orleans metropolitan area and is bordered by River Ridge, Elmwood, and Jefferson. The city is located at approximately 29.940° North latitude and 90.203° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 9,319 residents. Harahan covers about 2.66 square miles, or 6.89 square kilometers, and is almost entirely land. The community developed around the Illinois Central Railroad and was incorporated as a town in 1920 before becoming a city. Railroad transportation remains an important part of Harahan's history, while modern commerce is concentrated around the Elmwood business area. The Mississippi River forms the city's southern edge and is separated from much of the developed area by a levee system. Nearby attractions include the Elmwood shopping and business district, Rivertown, and the Audubon Zoo in neighboring New Orleans. Interstate 10, U.S. Highway 90, and Jefferson Highway provide convenient connections to New Orleans, Metairie, Kenner, and other parts of the region.
