Plaquemine is a city located in Iberville Parish, Louisiana, the United States. It lies on the west bank of the Mississippi River, about 20 miles south of Baton Rouge and roughly 25 miles north of Donaldsonville. Addis is around 15 miles north, while St. Gabriel is about 10 miles east across the river. Plaquemine is positioned near 30.289° North latitude and 91.234° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 6,269 residents. The city covers about 2.87 square miles, or 7.43 square kilometers. Plaquemine developed along waterways that were important to trade, farming, and transportation in the lower Mississippi Valley. The community was incorporated in 1837 and became the parish seat of Iberville Parish. Its name comes from a Native American word associated with the persimmon tree, reflecting the area's early Indigenous and French influences.
