It lies along the east bank of the Mississippi River in south-central Louisiana, about 15 miles south of Baton Rouge and roughly 20 miles north of Plaquemine. Gonzales is about 15 miles southeast, while Donaldsonville is approximately 25 miles southwest. St. Gabriel is located at 30.2552° North latitude and 91.1004° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 6,433 residents. The city covers about 29.66 square miles, or approximately 76.81 square kilometers. Old St. Gabriel Catholic Church is one of the city's most important historic landmarks and dates to the colonial era. The community was established by Acadian settlers during the Spanish colonial period.
