Covington is a city located in Newton County, Georgia, the United States. It is the county seat of Newton County and lies about 35 miles east of downtown Atlanta, 15 miles east of Conyers, and roughly 40 miles southwest of Athens. Covington is located at approximately 33.5960° North latitude and 83.8601° West longitude. The city covers about 18.26 square miles (47.29 sq km) and had 14,192 residents in the 2020 Census. The surrounding area features rolling Piedmont hills, forests, lakes, and farmland. Covington was incorporated in 1822 and named after General Leonard Covington, a U.S. Army officer and politician. The historic Covington Square is one of the city's best-known landmarks, with a courthouse, shops, restaurants, and historic buildings around the central green. Covington has also served as a filming location for several productions, earning it the nickname "Hollywood of the South."
