Danville is a city located in Vermilion County, Illinois, the United States. It is the county seat of Vermilion County and lies about 35 miles east of Champaign, 30 miles west of the Indiana state line, and roughly 140 miles south of Chicago. Danville is located at approximately 40.1245° North latitude and 87.6300° West longitude. The city covers about 17.70 square miles (45.84 sq km) and had 29,204 residents in the 2020 Census. The Vermilion River runs through the city and has influenced its development for more than a century. Danville was founded in 1827 and grew as a transportation, manufacturing, and coal-mining center. Abraham Lincoln practiced law in Danville and visited the community many times during his political career. The city has several sites connected to his life and Illinois history. Today, Danville serves as a regional center for Vermilion County.
