Fayetteville is a city located in Fayette County, Georgia, the United States. It lies in the southern part of the Atlanta metropolitan area, about 22 miles south of downtown Atlanta, 8 miles east of Peachtree City, and roughly 12 miles south of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. Fayetteville is positioned at approximately 33.449° North latitude and 84.455° West longitude. The city covers about 11.13 square miles, or 28.82 square kilometers, of land. The 2020 Census recorded 18,957 residents, while the 2023 population estimate was about 19,800. Fayetteville stands at an elevation of roughly 1,000 feet above sea level. The city was founded in 1823 and named after the Marquis de Lafayette, a French military officer who supported the American colonies during the Revolutionary War. Its historic courthouse square and downtown area reflect its long role as the county seat.
