Fitzgerald is a city located in Ben Hill County, Georgia, the United States. It lies in the Wiregrass region of south-central Georgia, about 115 miles south of Macon, 145 miles southeast of Atlanta, and roughly 50 miles north of Valdosta. Fitzgerald is positioned at approximately 31.714° North latitude and 83.252° West longitude. The city covers about 16.07 square miles, or 41.62 square kilometers, of land. The 2020 Census recorded 8,609 residents, while recent estimates place the population at about 8,500. Fitzgerald stands at an elevation of roughly 370 feet above sea level. The city was founded in 1895 by Philander H. Fitzgerald, a Union veteran who established a community for Civil War veterans from both the North and South. This unusual beginning helped give Fitzgerald its distinctive Blue and Gray heritage. The city is also famous for its population of wild Burmese chickens, descendants of birds introduced during its early history. Historic downtown Fitzgerald, the Blue and Gray Museum, and nearby nature areas are among its notable attractions.
