Where is Galesburg Located?
Galesburg is a city located in Knox County, Illinois, the United States. It lies in western Illinois, about 45 miles northwest of Peoria, 50 miles south of the Quad Cities, and roughly 165 miles west of Chicago. Galesburg is positioned at approximately 40.947° North latitude and 90.371° West longitude. The city covers about 17.21 square miles, or 44.57 square kilometers. The 2020 Census recorded 30,052 residents. Galesburg is best known for Knox College and its connection to the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debate, which was held at Knox College. The city also has a strong railroad heritage and was an important railroad center in the 19th and 20th centuries. The Galesburg Railroad Museum preserves this history through exhibits and artifacts. Galesburg is also the birthplace of poet Carl Sandburg, and the Carl Sandburg State Historic Site preserves his childhood home and local history.
