Greenville is a city located in Bond County, Illinois, the United States. It lies in southern Illinois, about 45 miles east of St. Louis, Missouri, and roughly 50 miles south of Springfield. Greenville is the county seat of Bond County and is part of the broader St. Louis metropolitan region. The city is located at approximately 38.893° North latitude and 89.413° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 6,694 residents. Greenville covers about 6.81 square miles, or 17.64 square kilometers, and is primarily land. The community was founded in 1819 and incorporated in 1855. Its location along historic transportation routes helped Greenville develop as a local center for agriculture, trade, education, and government.
