Where is Herrin Located?

Herrin is a city located in Williamson County, Illinois, the United States. It lies in Southern Illinois, about 95 miles southeast of St. Louis and roughly 5 miles southwest of Marion. Herrin is part of the Marion-Herrin Micropolitan Statistical Area and sits near the northern edge of the Shawnee National Forest. The city is located at approximately 37.803° North latitude and 89.027° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 12,352 residents. Herrin covers about 9.15 square miles, or 23.70 square kilometers. Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge, located nearby, is a major attraction with lakes, forests, wetlands, hiking areas, and wildlife habitat. Herrin developed rapidly during the late 19th and early 20th centuries because of the Southern Illinois coal industry. A unique part of the city's history is its connection to the Herrin Massacre of 1922, a violent labor conflict during the Illinois coal-mining era. Interstate 57 and nearby Illinois Route 13 provide connections to Carbondale, Marion, Mount Vernon, and other Southern Illinois communities.
