Inverness is a city located in Citrus County, Florida, the United States. It lies in west-central Florida, about 80 miles north of Tampa and roughly 85 miles west of Orlando. Inverness is the county seat of Citrus County and sits near several lakes and the Withlacoochee River. The city is located at approximately 28.835° North latitude and 82.330° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 7,543 residents. Inverness covers about 7.34 square miles, or 19.01 square kilometers. The city has a long history dating to the 19th century and developed around agriculture, timber, transportation, and the region's lakes and waterways. One of its best-known attractions is the Withlacoochee State Trail, a long multi-use trail popular for cycling, walking, and wildlife viewing. A unique feature of Inverness is its location within Florida's Nature Coast region, with many springs, forests, lakes, and wetlands nearby.
