LaFayette is a city located in Walker County, Georgia, the United States. It lies in northwest Georgia near the Tennessee state line, about 30 miles south of Chattanooga and roughly 100 miles north of Atlanta. The city is situated in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains at approximately 34.704° North latitude and 85.281° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 6,888 residents, and LaFayette covers about 8.45 square miles (21.89 sq km). LaFayette serves as the county seat of Walker County and is an important local center for government, commerce, and services. The city has strong connections to the area's Civil War history, with nearby Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park preserving important battlefields and historic sites. LaFayette developed in the 19th century and was named for the Marquis de Lafayette, the French military officer who supported the American Revolution.
