Litchfield is a city located in Montgomery County, Illinois, the United States. It lies in central Illinois, about 50 miles south of Springfield and roughly 45 miles north of St. Louis, Missouri. The city is located at approximately 39.176° North latitude and 89.654° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 6,997 residents, and Litchfield covers about 6.24 square miles (16.16 sq km). The community was founded in 1853 and grew as a railroad and agricultural center. Its location along the original U.S. Route 66 later gave the city an important connection to one of America's best-known highways. Litchfield's historic Route 66 attractions include the Ariston Café, one of the oldest continuously operating restaurants on the historic highway, and the Litchfield Museum and Route 66 Welcome Center.
