Mount Carmel is a city located in Wabash County, Illinois, the United States. It lies in southeastern Illinois along the Wabash River, which forms part of the border between Illinois and Indiana. Mount Carmel is about 45 miles north of Evansville, Indiana, and about 55 miles southeast of Mount Vernon, Illinois. Lawrenceville is roughly 25 miles northwest, while Princeton, Indiana, is about 30 miles east. The city is positioned near 38.411° North latitude and 87.762° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 6,858 residents. Mount Carmel covers about 5.76 square miles, or 14.92 square kilometers, of land and water. The Wabash River is its most important geographic feature and supports fishing, boating, and wildlife habitat. A unique fact about the city is that it was founded by a group of settlers from Kentucky and Tennessee in 1816 and later became the county seat of Wabash County.
