Pana is a city located in Christian County, Illinois, the United States. It lies in central Illinois, about 50 miles southeast of Springfield and roughly 25 miles southwest of Decatur. Taylorville is around 15 miles west, while Shelbyville is about 20 miles east. Pana is positioned near 39.389° North latitude and 89.080° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 5,614 residents. The city covers about 3.58 square miles, or 9.27 square kilometers. Pana developed during the 19th century as a railroad and coal-mining community, and rail connections helped the city become an important local trade center.
