Ponchatoula is a city located in Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana, the United States. It lies in southeastern Louisiana between Baton Rouge and New Orleans, about 45 miles northwest of New Orleans and roughly 40 miles east of Baton Rouge. Hammond is around 8 miles north, while Springfield is about 25 miles northwest. Ponchatoula is positioned near 30.438° North latitude and 90.442° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 7,226 residents. The city covers about 4.63 square miles, or 11.99 square kilometers. Ponchatoula was settled in the 19th century and incorporated in 1861. The arrival of the Illinois Central Railroad helped the community grow as a regional center for agriculture and trade. Strawberries became an important local crop, earning Ponchatoula the nickname "Strawberry Capital of Louisiana." The city continues to celebrate this agricultural heritage through the annual Ponchatoula Strawberry Festival, one of the state's best-known community festivals.
