Rock Falls is a city located in Whiteside County, Illinois, the United States. It lies along the Rock River in northwestern Illinois, about 45 miles northeast of the Quad Cities and roughly 25 miles southwest of Dixon. Sterling is directly across the river, while Morrison is around 15 miles southeast. Rock Falls is positioned near 41.779° North latitude and 89.689° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 8,749 residents. The city covers about 4.68 square miles, or 12.12 square kilometers. Rock Falls was settled in the 1830s and incorporated in 1867. Its development was closely tied to the Rock River, which provided water power, transportation, and a setting for early mills and manufacturing. The river remains the city's most important geographic feature and supports fishing, boating, hiking, and wildlife viewing. A unique feature of Rock Falls is its close relationship with neighboring Sterling, with the two communities forming a connected urban area on opposite sides of the Rock River.
