Spring Valley is a city located in Bureau County, Illinois, the United States. It lies in the Illinois River Valley of north-central Illinois, about 30 miles east of Peoria and roughly 90 miles southwest of Chicago. Peru is about 4 miles north, while LaSalle is approximately 6 miles northwest of Spring Valley. Princeton is about 15 miles west of the city. Spring Valley is located at 41.3275° North latitude and 89.1990° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 5,398 residents. The city covers about 2.94 square miles (7.61 square kilometers), with nearly all of its area consisting of land. Spring Valley grew rapidly during the late 19th and early 20th centuries because of coal mining, railroads, and river transportation. The Illinois River remains an important geographic feature of the surrounding region. Nearby Starved Rock State Park is known for sandstone canyons, waterfalls, forests, and scenic overlooks. A unique feature of Spring Valley is its strong connection to the Illinois Valley's coal-mining and industrial history while being close to some of northern Illinois' best-known natural attractions.
