Carlinville is about 15 miles north, while Litchfield is approximately 15 miles northeast of Staunton. The city is located at 39.0123° North latitude and 89.7912° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 5,020 residents. Staunton covers about 2.59 square miles (6.71 square kilometers), with nearly all of its area consisting of land. The community grew during the 19th century as coal mining, agriculture, railroads, and local commerce expanded across the region.
