It lies along the Rock River in northwestern Illinois, about 100 miles west of Chicago and roughly 50 miles northeast of the Quad Cities. Rock Falls borders Sterling across the Rock River, while Dixon is about 15 miles southwest. The city is located at 41.7886° North latitude and 89.6962° West longitude.
