Where is Stone Mountain Located?

Stone Mountain is a city located in DeKalb County, Georgia, the United States. It lies east of Atlanta, about 16 miles from downtown Atlanta and roughly 5 miles east of Decatur. Clarkston is about 5 miles southwest, while Lithonia is approximately 8 miles southeast of Stone Mountain. The city is located at 33.8082° North latitude and 84.1702° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 6,703 residents. Stone Mountain covers about 1.96 square miles, or approximately 5.08 square kilometers. Stone Mountain Park, located just outside the city, is the area's most famous attraction and centers on the world's largest exposed mass of granite. The mountain rises about 825 feet above the surrounding landscape and features a large Confederate Memorial carving on its north face. The city grew around a historic railroad community and retains a compact downtown with shops, restaurants, historic buildings, and civic landmarks. A unique feature of Stone Mountain is its close connection to the huge granite formation that has shaped the area's geology, tourism, industry, and identity.
