It is in east-central Georgia, about 30 miles south of Augusta, 65 miles northwest of Statesboro, and approximately 80 miles east of Macon. Waynesboro lies at about 33.090° North latitude and 82.016° West longitude. The city had 5,766 residents in the 2020 Census and covers about 6.36 square miles, or 16.47 square kilometers. Waynesboro was founded in the late 18th century and became the county seat of Burke County. Agriculture has long been central to the local economy, with farmland and forests surrounding the city. Waynesboro is widely known for its connection to bird-dog training and hunting traditions and has earned the nickname “Bird Dog Capital of the World.” The city is also close to the Ogeechee River and several natural areas.
