It is in southern Illinois, about 15 miles south of Benton, 25 miles west of Harrisburg, and roughly 50 miles southeast of Mount Vernon. West Frankfort lies at approximately 37.899° North latitude and 88.933° West longitude. The city had 7,178 residents in the 2020 Census and covers about 5.26 square miles, or 13.62 square kilometers. West Frankfort was founded in the 19th century and grew rapidly because of the region's coal mines and railroad connections.
