It is approximately 28 miles (45 km) west of Parkersburg, West Virginia, 43 miles (69 km) north of Gallipolis, and about 75 miles (121 km) southeast of Columbus. Athens is located at 39.3292° North latitude and 82.1013° West longitude. According to the 2020 United States Census, the city had a population of 23,849.
