Athens is a city located in Athens County, Ohio, the United States. The city lies in the Appalachian region of southeastern Ohio along the Hocking River. It is approximately 28 miles (45 km) west of Parkersburg, West Virginia, 43 miles (69 km) north of Gallipolis, and about 75 miles (121 km) southeast of Columbus. Athens is located at 39.3292° North latitude and 82.1013° West longitude. According to the 2020 United States Census, the city had a population of 23,849. Athens covers approximately 10.41 square miles (26.96 sq km). The city is best known for Ohio University, its lively Uptown district, and its location amid the rolling hills and forests of southeastern Ohio.
