Chillicothe is a city located in Ross County, Ohio, the United States. It is about 45 miles south of Columbus and 45 miles north of Portsmouth. Chillicothe is located at approximately 39.3331° North latitude and 82.9824° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 21,901 residents, and the city covers about 10.50 square miles (27.19 sq km). The Scioto River runs along the city, while the surrounding hills are part of the Appalachian foothills. Chillicothe was founded in 1796 and served as Ohio's first capital from 1803 to 1810 and again from 1812 to 1816. The city is also near several important Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks, which reflect the area's ancient Indigenous history.
