Darien is a city located in DuPage County, Illinois, the United States. It lies about 25 miles southwest of downtown Chicago and is part of the western Chicago metropolitan area. Darien is surrounded by communities such as Downers Grove, Willowbrook, Westmont, Woodridge, and Burr Ridge. The city is located at approximately 41.7453° North latitude and 87.9739° West longitude. Darien covers about 6.44 square miles (16.68 sq km) and had 22,011 residents in the 2020 Census. The city has a mainly suburban landscape with residential neighborhoods, commercial areas, parks, and wooded sections. Darien was incorporated in 1969 and developed rapidly as Chicago's suburbs expanded westward. The city's name was inspired by Darien, Connecticut. Major roads such as Interstate 55, Interstate 355, and Interstate 294 provide connections to Chicago and other parts of the region. Waterfall Glen Forest Preserve is one of the area's best-known natural attractions, offering trails, forests, wetlands, and open prairie. The Des Plaines River is also nearby.
