Defiance is a city located in Defiance County, Ohio, the United States. It is the county seat of Defiance County and lies in northwest Ohio at the meeting point of the Maumee and Auglaize rivers. The city is about 55 miles southwest of Toledo, 35 miles east of Fort Wayne, Indiana, and roughly 30 miles north of Lima. Defiance is located at approximately 41.2845° North latitude and 84.3558° West longitude. The city covers about 17.62 square miles (45.64 sq km) and had 17,066 residents in the 2020 Census. Its riverfront location has shaped the city's history and development. Fort Defiance was built at the site in 1794 during the Northwest Indian War under General Anthony Wayne. The community later became an important transportation center because of the Miami and Erie Canal and several railroads. Today, Defiance has a historic downtown, riverfront parks, trails, and museums. Fort Defiance Park offers views of the river junction and is one of the city's best-known landmarks. Independence Dam State Park, located nearby along the Maumee River, provides opportunities for boating, fishing, camping, hiking, and picnicking.
