It is the county seat of Walton County and sits in the Florida Panhandle, about 45 miles north of Destin and 75 miles east of Pensacola. The city is also about 30 miles south of the Alabama state line. DeFuniak Springs is located at approximately 30.7218° North latitude and 86.1152° West longitude. The city covers about 16.67 square miles (43.18 sq km) and had 5,279 residents in the 2020 Census. The area has pine forests, wetlands, rolling terrain, and clear spring-fed waterways. DeFuniak Springs was founded in the 1880s and incorporated in 1901. The city grew around the railroad and became an important educational and cultural center in the region.
