Edwardsville is a city located in Madison County, Illinois, the United States. It lies in southwestern Illinois within the Metro East portion of the St. Louis metropolitan area. Downtown St. Louis is about 20 miles southwest, while Alton is roughly 12 miles northwest and Collinsville is about 8 miles south. Edwardsville is located at approximately 38.81° North latitude and 89.95° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 24,293 residents. The city covers about 20.19 square miles, or 52.29 square kilometers. Edwardsville serves as the county seat of Madison County and is also home to Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, one of the region's largest educational institutions.
