Fremont is a city located in Sandusky County, Ohio, the United States. It lies in northwestern Ohio along the Sandusky River, about 35 miles southeast of Toledo, 30 miles southwest of Sandusky, and roughly 45 miles east of Bowling Green. Fremont is positioned at approximately 41.350° North latitude and 83.122° West longitude. The city covers about 8.37 square miles, or 21.68 square kilometers, including land and water. The 2020 Census recorded 15,930 residents, while recent estimates place the population at about 15,500. Fremont stands at an elevation of roughly 610 feet above sea level. The city was established in the early 19th century and grew as an important transportation and agricultural center along the Sandusky River. It was originally known as Lower Sandusky before being renamed Fremont in 1849 in honor of explorer and presidential candidate John C. Frémont. The city has a strong connection to U.S. President Rutherford B. Hayes, whose Spiegel Grove estate and presidential library are major local landmarks.
