Where is Harvey Located?

Harvey is a city located in Cook County, Illinois, the United States. It lies about 20 miles south of downtown Chicago in the southern suburbs of the Chicago metropolitan area. Harvey is bordered by several communities, including Dixmoor, Phoenix, Markham, and South Holland. The city is located at approximately 41.610° North latitude and 87.652° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 20,324 residents. Harvey covers about 6.24 square miles, or 16.16 square kilometers, and is primarily land. The community was founded in the 1890s and incorporated in 1891. It was established as a planned community and was named after Turlington W. Harvey, an early supporter of the settlement. Harvey developed quickly because of its location along important railroad lines connecting Chicago with industrial areas to the south. Manufacturing and industry later became major parts of the local economy. Today, Harvey is a diverse residential community with a long industrial heritage. The Little Calumet River flows near the city, while nearby forest preserves provide opportunities for walking, fishing, wildlife viewing, and outdoor recreation. Interstate 294, Interstate 57, and Illinois Route 1 provide convenient road connections to Chicago and communities throughout the southern metropolitan area.
