It lies along the western shore of Lake Michigan, about 25 miles north of downtown Chicago and roughly 5 miles south of Lake Forest. Highland Park is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and the North Shore region. The city is located at approximately 42.182° North latitude and 87.800° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 30,176 residents. Highland Park covers about 12.25 square miles, or 31.73 square kilometers.
