Where is LaSalle Located?

LaSalle is a city located in LaSalle County, Illinois, the United States. It lies in the Illinois Valley along the Illinois River, about 95 miles southwest of Chicago and roughly 75 miles east of Peoria. The city is located at approximately 41.333° North latitude and 89.091° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 9,582 residents, and LaSalle covers about 12.15 square miles (31.47 sq km). LaSalle developed in the 19th century as a transportation and industrial center connected to the Illinois and Michigan Canal, railroads, coal mining, and nearby limestone quarries. The city was named for René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle, the French explorer associated with the Illinois River region. One of the area's most important attractions is Starved Rock State Park, located just east of the city and known for sandstone canyons, waterfalls, wooded trails, and overlooks above the Illinois River. The nearby Illinois and Michigan Canal corridor also preserves an important part of the region's transportation history. A unique feature of LaSalle is its location within a historic canal and river corridor that helped connect the Great Lakes with the Mississippi River system.
