Where is Lockport Located?
Lockport is a city located in Will County, Illinois, the United States. It lies in northeastern Illinois, about 30 miles southwest of downtown Chicago and roughly 15 miles northeast of Joliet. The city is located at approximately 41.589° North latitude and 88.057° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 26,094 residents, and Lockport covers about 11.40 square miles (29.53 sq km). The community was settled in the early 19th century and grew rapidly after the Illinois and Michigan Canal opened in 1848. Lockport became an important transportation and industrial center because of its location along the canal and Des Plaines River. The historic downtown still reflects this early canal-era development. The Gaylord Building is a major landmark and one of the oldest surviving commercial buildings associated with the Illinois and Michigan Canal. Lockport Cave and the nearby Illinois and Michigan Canal Trail provide opportunities to explore the area's transportation history. A unique feature of Lockport is its connection to the canal system that helped link the Great Lakes with the Illinois River and the Mississippi River watershed. The city is also close to major forest preserves and waterways in the Chicago region.
