Markham is a city located in Cook County, Illinois, the United States. It lies in the southern suburbs of Chicago, about 20 miles south of downtown Chicago and roughly 5 miles west of Homewood. Markham is located at approximately 41.600° North latitude and 87.694° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 12,786 residents, and the city covers about 5.35 square miles (13.86 sq km). Markham was incorporated as a village in 1925 and became a city in 1967. The community developed during the expansion of Chicago's southern suburbs, with transportation routes and nearby industrial areas supporting residential growth. Today, Markham is a compact urban community surrounded by other south suburban municipalities.
