It lies in southwestern Illinois, about 15 miles east of downtown St. Louis and roughly 5 miles southeast of Scott Air Force Base. Fairview Heights is about 5 miles west, while Shiloh is around 5 miles south. O'Fallon is positioned near 38.592° North latitude and 89.912° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 32,289 residents. The city covers about 15.24 square miles, or 39.47 square kilometers, including land and water. O'Fallon developed as a railroad community in the 19th century and was named for John O'Fallon, a prominent railroad investor and civic leader.
