Punta Gorda is a city located in Charlotte County, Florida, the United States. It is on Florida's southwestern Gulf Coast at the northern end of Charlotte Harbor, about 25 miles north of Fort Myers and roughly 30 miles south of Sarasota. Port Charlotte lies directly across the Peace River, while Arcadia is about 30 miles northeast. Punta Gorda is positioned near 26.929° North latitude and 82.046° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 19,471 residents. The city covers about 21.66 square miles, or 56.10 square kilometers. Punta Gorda was incorporated in 1887 and became the county seat of Charlotte County in 1921. Its location on Charlotte Harbor helped shape its early growth through fishing, shipping, and railroad transportation. Historic downtown Punta Gorda contains preserved buildings, small parks, shops, restaurants, and streets dating from the city's early development. Fishermen's Village is another well-known waterfront attraction, with marina facilities, shops, restaurants, and views across Charlotte Harbor.
