Sanibel is a city located in Lee County, Florida, the United States. It occupies Sanibel Island on Florida’s southwest Gulf Coast, west of Fort Myers and near Captiva Island. Sanibel is about 20 miles from Fort Myers, 30 miles from Cape Coral, and about 45 miles from Naples by road. The city is located at 26.4531° North latitude and 82.0998° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded a population of 6,382. Sanibel has a total area of about 33.21 square miles (86.01 square kilometers), including land and water. The J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge protects a large area of mangrove forests and coastal wetlands. Sanibel is also known for its unusual east-west orientation, which helps its beaches collect large numbers of seashells along the shoreline.
