It lies in central Illinois, about 85 miles northeast of St. Louis, Missouri, and roughly 65 miles southwest of Bloomington. Decatur is about 45 miles east, while Jacksonville is approximately 35 miles west of Springfield. The city is located at 39.7817° North latitude and 89.6501° West longitude. The city has served as Illinois' state capital since 1839 and remains the center of state government.
