It is in northwestern Ohio, about 35 miles southeast of Fort Wayne, Indiana, 30 miles southwest of Lima, and roughly 55 miles northwest of Findlay. Van Wert lies at approximately 40.869° North latitude and 84.584° West longitude. The city had 10,492 residents in the 2020 Census and covers about 7.86 square miles, or 20.36 square kilometers. Van Wert was founded in 1824 and became the county seat of Van Wert County. The city is best known for Brumback Library, which opened in 1901 and is recognized as the first county-wide public library in the United States.
