Where is Wood River Located?

Wood River is a city located in Madison County, Illinois, the United States. It is in southwestern Illinois along the Mississippi River, about 20 miles north of downtown St. Louis, 5 miles south of Alton, and approximately 15 miles west of Edwardsville. Wood River lies at approximately 38.861° North latitude and 90.098° West longitude. The city had 10,464 residents in the 2020 Census and covers about 7.13 square miles, or 18.47 square kilometers. Wood River was incorporated in 1908 and developed rapidly during the early 20th century because of the railroad, river transportation, petroleum refining, and other industrial activities. The city's location along the Mississippi River helped make it an important transportation and manufacturing center. Today, Wood River has residential neighborhoods, commercial areas, industrial facilities, and access to regional recreation areas. The nearby Mississippi River provides important wildlife habitat and opportunities for fishing, boating, and birdwatching.
