Zion is a city located in Lake County, Illinois, the United States. It is in northeastern Illinois along Lake Michigan, about 40 miles north of downtown Chicago, 10 miles south of the Wisconsin border, and approximately 15 miles east of Waukegan. Zion lies at approximately 42.446° North latitude and 87.832° West longitude. The city had 24,655 residents in the 2020 Census and covers about 8.45 square miles, or 21.89 square kilometers. Zion was founded in 1901 by John Alexander Dowie as a planned Christian community and was incorporated in 1902. The city's early development was shaped by religious settlement, agriculture, manufacturing, and transportation. Its location near Lake Michigan and the Chicago-Milwaukee corridor helped support continued growth. Today, Zion has established residential neighborhoods, commercial areas, parks, schools, and lakefront recreation.
