It lies in the northern part of the state in the state of the United States on Alameda Island and Bay Farm Island along the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay. The city was incorporated in 1854 and was named from the Spanish word “álameda,” meaning “grove of poplar trees,” and it developed as a port and naval base before becoming a residential and commercial community.
